The distribution centre included a major network link with British Rail and a terminal
linking the underground with Paddington
Station.
The distribution centre incorporates a
10,000m2 fully automated distribution hall
including 3,400m2 of office and welfare
accommodation and maintenance facilities.
The rail interface concourse and the rail trace
enclosure dimensions are 80m wide and 250m
long. The ‘hub’ will handle 2.1 millions items
of post a day as the central hub for UK distribution.
Foreman Roberts was responsible for the building
services for the entire facility including the
interface with Railtrack. Design options were
evaluated including modelling of the effect of
diesel engines entering a working environment.
The extensive electrical installations included
infrastructure for Railnet’s 25000 volt systems,
850 volt train ‘shore’ supplies and 11kV HV
generators.
